A project for the restoration of wetlands and associated endangered

species in the Luxemburgish Ardennes mountains.

LIFE11 NAT/LU/858

On 14th June 2012 the Life + selection committee of the European Commission accepted an ambitious nature conservation project in Luxembourg. The objective is to continue the restoration of wetlands and the associated species assemblages.

Life Projects are co-financed by the European Union and aim at restoring an ecological infrastructure with particular emphasis on improving the conservation status of biotopes and species’ habitats that are targeted by the Nature 2000 network.

natur&ëmwelt – Fondation Hëllef fir d´Natur has associated itself to several partners, such as natur&ëmwelt asbl, the Comité national de défense sociale (CNDS) and the Chamber of agriculture to bring this ambitious project to a successful end.

The project aims to restore the traditional mosaic of habitats, composed of wet fallow land, extensive pastures and hay meadows with delayed cutting regimes. These measures will favour bird species such as the Whinchat and the Red-backed shrike, as well as the Violet copper, Europe’s rarest butterfly species. All of these three emblematic species are typical for the wet grasslands of the Ardennes region:

* Violet copper – Lycaena helle (Denis et Schiffermüller, 1775), as a typical glacial relict species, this tiny butterfly is in Luxembourg limited to the wetlands in the north of the country (Éislek). Its populations are often very small and tend to be isolated. The species only occurs in abandoned or very extensively managed wetlands with sufficient protection from the wind and with appropriate cover of the Common bistort (Polygonum bistorta), the larvae’s only food source.

* Whinchat– Saxicola rubetra (Linnaeus, 1758), a migrating bird of the Muscicapidae family (flycatchers). As a ground breeding bird, the Whinchat in Luxembourg tends to be restricted to wet grasslands near rivers and streams as well as swampy areas, which are traditionally farmed much later in the year. Whinchats are insectivorous and feed on a large variety of insects and other invertebrates, which they tend to hunt from atop an elevated perch (shrubs, perennials, fenceposts).

* Red-backed shrike Lanius collurio (Linnaeus, 1758), a carnivorous migratory bird of the shrike family (Laniidae), which in the Éislek region occupies mosaics of open habitat, rich in hedges, shrubs and extensive meadows. Red-backed shrikes tend to set up their territories in close vicinity to patches of recently clear-felled areas or fallow land, as these tend to be particularly rich in insects (and other prey species). As the species uses a “sit-and-wait” hunting technique, elevated perches (fenceposts, trees, shrubs, etc.) from which birds can survey their territory, are vitally important.

Duration of the project: 01.09.2012 – 31-08-2017

The LIFE EISLEK aims to carry out several concrete actions:

  • Contribution to the technical preparation of the Nature 2000 management plans in close collaboration with all stakeholders, particularly in the agricultural and forestry stakeholders,
  • Optimisation of the grazing/cutting management of more than 135 ha of wet meadows belonging to the Luxembourgish state or n&ë – Fondation HfN,
  • Improvement of the cutting/grazing conditions through the purchase of specially adapted equipment and the installation of grazing-related structures (fences, drinking troughs, livestock crossings, cattle shelter,…)
  • Purchase of 30ha of land by n&ë – Fondation HfN in order to expand the habitat available to the 3 target species,
  • Scrub clearance and restorative mowing on at least 10 ha of abandoned or fallow farmland,
  • Restoration of the hydrologic balance of the alluvial plains along 1,8km of waterways as well as the removal of 500m of existing drains,
  • Clear-felling of 5ha of spruce trees planted in wet habitats and conversion of 15ha of previously deforested plantations into extensive grassland,
  • Restoration of 10 ha of bistort and meadowsweet meadows through a mixture of sowing, hay transfer and replanting of rhizomes,
  • Planting of 7000 hedges and solitary trees,
  • Consultation of farmers inside the project area and implementation of extensification measures (agri-environment schemes) on 50ha of grassland,
  • Implementation of a rigorous monitoring programme for all 3 target species in order to make sure the restoration aims have been met,
  • Increasing the amount of available information and raising environmental awareness of the general public and farmers in particular.
